Ten Power Tool Precautions You Should Remember

The operator of a power tool has to arm himself with the necessary knowledge on the safety precautions that entails the usage of any power tool. These precautions are implemented in order to protect the operator and other people as well as reduce the incidences of power tool related accidents. Here are some of the precautions to bear in mind.

1. Most power tools with moving parts like revolving blades, gears, shafts, pulleys and chains usually have guards. These are intentionally installed to protect the operator from flying chips and sparks or other objects that can potentially injure him. These guards should not be removed from the tool especially when it is being used. In case the tool comes with a guard that is placed after the tool is used, then this guard should be placed on the tool immediately.

2. It is also important that the operator is aware of the location of the safety switch. Most power tools are equipped with this switch that can be helpful in case of emergencies. Different types of power tools have different types of safety switches. The operator should be well aware of how to turn the switch on or off when needed.

3. When using electric power tools, it would be advisable that the operator wear the appropriate gear. These gears are made especially to protect the wearer from electric shocks, burns and worse electrocution.

4. Electric tools should only be used in a dry place. Using it in wet and damp areas will increase the risk of electrocution.

5. The grinder is considered as a power abrasive tool. This type of power tool is often used to soften rough areas and edges. It is also used to polish surfaces. The danger in using this tool is that fragments can fly off. So to avoid being hit by these fragments, the operator should not forget to wear eye protection such as goggles in order to keep his eyes safe.

6. Power tools usually have cords. When it is time to disconnect it, it is not advisable to simply yank it because it might recoil and you will end up losing your balance. In addition, the chord might separate from the plug. Remember that a damaged and malfunctioning tool is not safe to use.

7. When doing tool maintenance, make sure that it is turned of and the plug is disconnected from the socket. This is done to prevent you from accidentally turning it on while you are cleaning or changing some parts.

8. Always keep the tool in good condition. Using damaged tools or poorly maintained tools will increase the risk of malfunction as well as accidents.

9. Do not dangle any hand held power tools like grinders and cutters when you are carrying it because you might end up hitting and hurting yourself or others.

10. If you have to carry a tool while it is plugged in, always keep your finger away from the power button to prevent it from accidentally starting.
